LATEST TETRATHLON NEWS

Local girl Bethany Humphries, a Fleetwood Swimming Club 'A' squad member, has excelled at the Cheshire and Lancashire Tetrathlon Championships to show her talents extend far from the swimming pool. Kelsall in Cheshire was the venue for the Championships which were held over the weekend of the 17th and 18th of July.

The 12 year old accompanied by her horse Louie won the under 15 title. The sport includes a 1500m run, a swim lasting 3 minutes, a cross country horse ride over 20 jumps and a shooting event where the competitor must fire at a turning target, holding a pistol one handed, from a range of 7 metres.

Bethany won both the swimming and the running events and followed by a steady shoot then clinched overall victory with an accomplished ride on Louie. Bethany shows much dedication to her sport, swimming a minimum of 5 times a week, looking after Louie every day and also practices shooting twice a week.

EUROPEAN  JUNIOR INDIVIDUAL SILVER MEDALIST - KATY BURKE

Katy Burke wins individual silver as GB take team gold at the 2010 European Junior Championships

Great Britain are celebrating a double success at the modern pentathlon European Junior Championships after winning the women's team gold and an individual silver medal in Portugal.

Katy Burke won the individual silver medal at the championships in Golega and teamed up with Freyja Prentice and Samantha Murray to collect team gold.

Prentice just missed out on a second individual medal, finishing fourth, while Murray finished 15th and Lydia Rosling was 22nd.

"It was a very good day for the team,” said Istvan Nemeth, Britain’s women’s head coach.

Burke is originally from Cleveleys near Blackpool but is now training at the Pentathlon GB high performance centre at the University of Bath, where she has recently completed studying for a degree in Sports Performance.

She said: “ It’s my best result yet, I can’t quite believe it. I hoped for a medal, but with pentathlon you never really know.

“It was so good for the whole team to win the team gold as well,” she added. “I started with a strong fence today, my swim was pretty average but my shooting was really good.”

Burke was fourth going into the final disciplines of the pentathlon - the combined run/shoot  - but climbed into a medal position with a strong performance. Prentice also climbed from sixth to fourth, with Murray going into the run/shoot in 10th and Rosling 24th.

Burke got her day off to a good start winning 21 of her 35 fencing bouts and followed that up with 2:11.94 in the pool, the sixth best time.

Murray clocked the second fastest time in the pool today – 2:09.62, while Prentice won 22 of her 35 fencing contests – the joint fifth best performance

Individual gold went to Russia’s Ekaterina Khuraskina, with Anais Eudes of France taking bronze.

Fleetwood member Katy Burke came fourth at the latest leg of the Modern Pentathlon World Cup series held in Medway, Kent on the 11th April 2010.

Having qualified from her semi-final on the Friday Katy went into the 36 athlete final on the Sunday and started with a solid fence gaining 16 victories for a score of 856 points, putting her in 13th place. The second event of the day was the 200m swim, normally Katy’s strongest event having been trained at Fleetwood. She didn’t disappoint with a time of 2 minutes 10 seconds for 1240 points, giving her fourth place on the swim and moving her up to 6th place overall. Next was the ride, where Katy had three fences down gaining a score of 1140 points, finishing 12th and moving her to 5th place overall.

The last event of a Modern Pentathlon is now a combined run and shoot with a handicapped start, therefore Katy started in 5th position. She moved up one place to fourth, just failing to catch Great Britain teammate Mhairi Spence who had started 38 seconds in front of Katy.

Katy currently trains at the Modern Pentathlon National Training Centre at Bath University and will be targeting a place at London 2012. However her time in Modern Pentathlon started at Fleetwood where there is a thriving section of the club with current members being part of World Class programs and competing internationally.
